A hardy rhizome plant for low- to moderate-light aquariums. Keep the rhizome above the substrate and attach it to rock or wood.
Java fern
Another forgiving rhizome plant that works beautifully in low-tech planted tanks. Trim older leaves and avoid burying the rhizome.
Cryptocoryne
A rooted midground plant that rewards patience. It may melt after a move, then regrow once the aquarium stabilizes.
Bucephalandra
A slow-growing, textured plant that brings detail to rock and wood. It prefers steady conditions and moderate light.
Algae desk
Algae is usually a signal about balance—not a verdict on your tank. Start with the basics: photoperiod, flow, feeding, plant health, and consistency. Change one variable at a time.
- Brown diatoms are common in new aquariums and often fade as the system matures.
- Hair algae can point to excess light, unstable carbon, or slow plant growth.
- Green dust algae often responds to consistent cleaning and a steadier routine.
- Cyanobacteria deserves careful identification before treatment.
